Eligibility:
Education and Experience:
-Recent Ph.D. degree in atmospheric physics, meteorology, earth system sciences or a related field.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
-Science interest in Arctic processes and/or clouds.
-Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
-Strong written and oral communication skills, especially for scientific publications.
-Proficiency in software diagnostic tools such as NCL, IDL or MATLAB and experience in scientific computing.
-Experience working in a LINUX command line computing environment.
DESIRED (but not required):
-Familiarity with satellite and in-situ data analysis.
-Familiarity with atmospheric modeling.

Scholarship Description: This is a new, full-time two-year term position.The basic job function is Conducts research on ice and mixed phase clouds with the Community Atmosphere Model and the Community Earth System Model, as well as with in-situ aircraft and satellite observations. Research will be focused on analyzing model output and analyzing multi-satellite and aircraft observations. Several specific aircraft camping periods will be targeted. The project will also attempt to use this information to improve simulations of ice and mixed phase clouds.
Conducts independent and collaborative research. Uses satellite and in-situ data to better understand the processes that govern mixed phase and ice clouds and their role in the climate system. Analyzes global model output, including using forecast runs and runs with satellite simulators, and compares it to observations from in-situ aircraft and satellites. Develops modifications to cloud parameterizations to improve simulations. Tasks will include analysis of existing model integrations and observations and will also involve additional integrations with CESM component models as part of the model development process to test hypotheses and to enhance understanding of the underlying physical mechanisms being studied.
