Study Subject: overcoming cellular barriers using dendrimer-based drug carriers Employer: The University of Central Lancashire Level: PhD Scholarship Description: Applications are invited for a full-time scholarship available in the School of Pharmacy & Biomedical Sciences. The scholarship is tenable for up to 3 years for a PhD (via MPhil route) [subject to satisfactory progress] and is open to international applicants only. UK/EU applicants are not eligible to apply. The scholarship will provide £15000 towards the cost of the International tuition fee over 3 years. Dendrimers are highly branched macromolecules with a well—defined structure and multiple surface functional groups. Due to the unique characteristics, dendrimers have potential for a wide range of pharmaceutical applications such as drug solubilisation, drug delivery and targeting. Pioneering work in our laboratories has shown that dendrimer carriers can be used to bypass efflux transporter systems in model barriers for the gastrointestinal tract and blood?brain barrier. This project will explore the utility of dendrimer carriers to overcome cellular barriers and to target specific regions in the cell. Novel dendrimers will be utilised and drug conjugates designed, synthesised and characterised. These conjugates will be evaluated in a range of cell lines
